Gabon President Oligui Nguema meets PDG leadership amid party dispute
Gabon President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema received a delegation from the Democratic Party of Gabon (PDG) in Libreville on October 30, 2026. The meeting, led by PDG President Blaise Louembé, comes ahead of a decisive party congress scheduled for November.
The PDG, which held power for decades under Omar Bongo Ondimba and his son Ali Bongo Ondimba, is currently facing an internal leadership struggle. While Blaise Louembé was elected president during an extraordinary congress in January 2025, Ali Bongo continues to contest the new leadership and claims the presidency of the party.
During the audience, President Oligui Nguema emphasized his role as a guarantor of national unity, stating that political differences should not prevent the gathering of Gabonese citizens around the nation's interests. The meeting is seen as an effort to promote political dialogue and social cohesion within the country's evolving political landscape.
