Gabon reforms political party laws to ensure national representation

Gabon is undergoing a significant restructuring of its political landscape following the implementation of a new law passed on June 27, 2025. The reform aims to reduce the proliferation of political parties by requiring them to demonstrate genuine national representativeness.

To maintain legal status, political formations must now prove a verifiable territorial presence across all nine provinces of the country and meet reinforced membership thresholds. The law also imposes strict institutional and accounting requirements, including fund traceability and the regular holding of congresses.

Following a regularization deadline on July 2, only 69 out of 102 legally recognized parties successfully submitted the required documentation. This has left 33 parties in a position where they must face inevitable recomposition, mergers, or groupings to comply with the new legal framework.
