Gabon legislative and political reforms

Gabon is implementing a series of legislative reforms aimed at restructuring its political and social landscape. Following a law passed in June 2025, the country introduced new requirements for political parties to ensure national representation. To maintain legal status, parties must demonstrate a presence in all nine provinces and meet specific membership and accounting standards. As of July 2025, only 69 of 102 recognized parties successfully met these requirements, necessitating mergers or recompositions for the remaining 33.

Building on these structural changes, lawmakers have launched regional tours to brief citizens on the outcomes of the first ordinary parliamentary session of 2026. These tours, involving deputies and senators, have reached provinces such as Woleu-Ntem, Haut-Ogooué, and regions including Bakoumba and Mounana. During these sessions, officials have reported on the adoption of 23 legislative texts, many of which were passed unanimously.

In August 2026, these briefings continued with outreach in the 1st arrondissement of Oyem. Deputy Jael Lebeau Mebale M’Ella met with residents in neighborhoods such as Bouloungou and Mont-Miyele to discuss the work of the 14th legislature. She reported that out of 34 texts examined, 23 were adopted. These include ordinances and bills concerning nationality, land titles, social media regulation, public health (specifically regarding smoking bans), and the creation of a uniform manufacturing company for defense and security forces.

In the Lékoko department, Deputy Mesmin Boris Ngabikoumou Wada and Senator Chrisos Longho held briefings in Bakoumba. Their discussions focused on the impact of recently adopted laws regarding land property, nationality codes, and social media usage. These legislative efforts, supported by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, are part of a broader initiative to address national expectations and implement structural national projects.
