Gabon to train jobseekers to address teacher shortages

The Gabonese government is developing a training initiative to convert jobseekers into educators to address a chronic shortage of teachers in public schools. The Ministry of National Education estimates a shortfall of approximately 1,347 teachers for 2025, with nearly 900 needed in scientific disciplines.

Under the proposed plan, candidates with scientific and technical backgrounds will undergo an 18-month work-study program at the Institute for Training and Personal Development (IFDP). Meanwhile, university graduates holding bachelor’s or master’s degrees will attend the Institute for Training in Education Professions (IFME) to prepare for secondary school teaching positions.

Minister of State for National Education Camélia Ntoutoume-Leclercq recently met with members of the National Movement of Gabonese Visionaries (MNVG) in Libreville to discuss temporary employment solutions for jobseekers awaiting permanent integration into the civil service. This initiative follows a commitment made by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema two years ago to restore public services and address administrative regularizations.
