Gabon education recruitment and teacher training initiatives

Overview

The Gabonese Ministry of National Education is implementing strategies to address staffing shortages and improve conditions for educational personnel. Minister of State Camélia Ntoutoume Leclercq has focused on civil service recruitment, noting that while there are many applicants with diverse degrees, the priority is filling administrative, technical, and traditional teaching roles. To combat a projected shortfall of approximately 1,347 teachers for 2025—including nearly 900 needed for scientific disciplines—the government is developing training initiatives. These include an 18-month work-study program at the Institute for Training and Personal Development for candidates with scientific backgrounds, and specialized training at the Institute for Training in Education Professions for university graduates. Beyond recruitment, the ministry is working to improve the living standards of educators. Plans include establishing a commission with banks to facilitate access to credit for land, housing, and vehicles, as well as reviewing land designated for the educational community in the Ayémé plain. Recent efforts have expanded to practical pedagogical training in the provinces. In Makokou, a five-day session concluded for teachers in the Ogooué-Ivindo province, focusing on the use of ‘Super Efficace’ textbooks for first-year students in subjects such as English, mathematics, and environmental studies. Provincial academy director Jean Lin Essié Efé stated the initiative aims to teach educators to use textbooks as professional tools tailored to student needs. This training aligns with President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema’s development goals, which prioritize education as a driver for national progress. Expanding on these staffing efforts, the Centre national des œuvres universitaires (CNOU) has announced recruitment for support staff at the Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema International University in Cap Estérias. The drive seeks Gabonese nationals between the ages of 18 and 45 to fill various roles, including hospitality, maintenance, finance, and technical services, such as cooks, technicians, accountants, and IT specialists.
