Gabriel Attal and Edouard Philippe Launch 2027 Presidential Bids Amid French PM History

Gabriel Attal announced his candidacy for the French presidential election of 2027 from the village of Mur‑de‑Barrez in Aveyron. The 38‑year‑old, who became France’s youngest prime minister in 2024 and leader of the centrist Renaissance party, positioned his run as a break from President Emmanuel Macron’s line, highlighting his experience in government communication, education reform and fiscal policy.

Former prime minister Edouard Philippe also declared his intention to run, joining Attal as the latest ex‑premier to seek the Élysée. Analysts noted that several former French prime ministers have struggled to win the presidency, citing the defeats of Jacques Chaban‑Delmas, Lionel Jospin and others.
