Gabriel Attal proposes a ‘United States of Europe’

Gabriel Attal, the Renaissance party secretary general and presidential candidate, has proposed a vision for a ‘United States of Europe’ to counter competition from the United States, China, and Russia. Speaking from Reims, Attal argued that the current 27-member European Union has reached its limits and requires a more offensive approach to remain competitive.

His proposal involves the economic and ecological fusion of a ‘hard core’ of European countries. Key elements of this plan include the removal of economic borders, the alignment of taxes, shared labor laws, the creation of banking and telecommunications champions, and the issuance of common debt. Attal emphasized that sovereign powers would remain with national governments.

To implement this, Attal suggested holding a simultaneous referendum across all participating countries. The proposed structure would include a president elected by universal suffrage and a parliament composed of existing European deputies. This platform serves as a strategic move to differentiate himself from political rivals within the central bloc, such as Edouard Philippe.
