Gabriel Attal European integration proposal

Gabriel Attal, the Renaissance party secretary general and French presidential candidate, has proposed a vision for a ‘United States of Europe’ to enhance competitiveness against the United States, China, and Russia.

Attal’s proposal suggests that the current 27-member European Union has reached its limits. He advocates for an economic and ecological fusion of a ‘hard core’ consisting of eight to ten countries. Key elements of this plan include the removal of economic borders, aligned taxation, shared labor and business laws, and the creation of unified banking and telecommunications champions. To fund strategic sectors such as artificial intelligence, space exploration, nuclear energy, and defense, the plan calls for a unified capital market and a common treasury capable of issuing joint debt.

To implement this structure, Attal suggested holding simultaneous referendums across participating nations. The proposed model would feature a president elected by universal suffrage and a parliament of existing European deputies, though Attal emphasized that sovereign powers and control over individual militaries would remain with national governments. This platform positions Attal as a leading pro-European candidate in the presidential race, where he currently trails centrist rivals in polling.
