Gabriel Attal urged by 500 French local officials to run in 2027 presidential election

Around 500 local elected officials across France, including regional president Renaud Muselier and Bordeaux mayor Thomas Cazenave, signed a public appeal urging Prime Minister Gabriel Attal to declare his candidacy for the 2027 French presidential election. The call, published in La Tribune, emphasizes the need for a leadership figure the country requires.

MoDem parliamentary group leader Marc Fesneau, speaking on TF1, said it is still too early to formally back any candidate. He warned that premature endorsements could polarise the political arena and stressed the importance of focusing on policy proposals rather than personalities. Fesneau reiterated that the centrist party will continue to coordinate with allies such as the UDI and the Radical Party to shape the centre‑ground of the upcoming contest.
