Gabriele Fava proposes individual pension accounts for newborns in Italy

Gabriele Fava, president of INPS, has proposed the creation of an individual pension account for every newborn to address Italy’s demographic decline and ensure future pension sustainability. The proposal suggests that the state provide an annual contribution of at least 1,000 euros per newborn, rather than a one-time bonus.

This capital would be invested over several decades to grow through individual capitalization, eventually serving to supplement public pensions. With approximately 355,000 births annually in Italy, the initial estimated cost to the state would be 355 million euros.

The idea has reportedly received openness from Labor Minister Marina Calderone and Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti. While currently a study project, the proposal may be considered for inclusion in the 2027 Budget Law.
