Hyderabad building collapse leads to owner detention and safety inspections

The owner of a collapsed six-story building in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, has been detained by Cyberabad police. Syed Sajid was taken into custody at Shamshabad Airport on Monday following an alleged attempt to leave the country. The collapse, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in the deaths of two tile workers from Madhya Pradesh, identified as Umesh Khare and Mohpal Bhalavi.

Investigators allege the building was constructed without required municipal permissions. Police are also searching for the building contractor, Khaja, to determine the sequence of events and supervision levels.

In response to the incident, the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) and the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) have begun inspecting potentially unsafe structures in the Anjaiahnagar area. Officials noted that many hazardous buildings in the region were constructed beyond permitted floor limits on small plots or encroached upon drain lines. Demolition of the damaged structure is underway, with precautions being taken to protect neighboring apartments.
