Hyderabad building collapse and investigation
Overview
A seven-storey under-construction building collapsed in the Anjaiah Nagar area of Madhapur, Hyderabad, on a Saturday afternoon. The incident killed two workers, identified as Mahabat and Umesh, who were performing tile work at the site. Several other individuals were injured when debris fell onto adjacent apartment buildings.
Investigations revealed the structure was built on a small plot of approximately 50 to 60 square yards and allegedly encroached upon a nearby drain without required setbacks or municipal permissions. Although construction had previously been halted for months due to lack of authorization, work reportedly resumed illegally.
Following the collapse, the Cyberabad Municipal Commissioner suspended the Madhapur Town Planning Officer, Santosh Kumar. The building owner, Syed Sajid, was later detained by Cyberabad police at Shamshabad Airport following an alleged attempt to leave the country. Authorities are also searching for the building contractor, Khaja.
In response to the tragedy, the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation and the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) have initiated inspections of potentially unsafe structures in the region. Officials noted that many hazardous buildings in the area were constructed beyond permitted floor limits or encroached upon drain lines. Demolition of the damaged structure is underway, and residents of nearby apartments have been evacuated as a precaution.
