Gadi Eisenkot rejects coalition with Netanyahu ahead of elections
Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the ‘Yisrael Beiteinu’ party and former Israeli Chief of Staff, has categorically refused to serve in any government led by Benjamin Netanyahu. Speaking to 103 FM, Eisenkot stated he would not participate in a coalition under Netanyahu, even under a rotating prime ministership agreement where the two leaders would alternate terms.
While Eisenkot has not ruled out forming a unity government where he serves as prime minister alongside the Likud party, such a scenario faces legal complexities due to Netanyahu’s ongoing corruption trial. Eisenkot cited Netanyahu’s responsibility for the events of October 7, 2023, as a primary reason for his refusal to serve alongside him.
As the October 27 elections approach, polling shows the Netanyahu bloc and the opposition led by Eisenkot are nearly tied, with neither side expected to secure the 61 seats required for a majority in the Knesset. Israeli President Isaac Herzog has expressed a desire to avoid the political deadlock seen in previous years by seeking a unity or rotating government if no clear majority emerges.
