Gaetano Armao faces arrest request in Sicilian corruption probe

The Palermo Prosecutor's Office has launched a corruption investigation involving nine individuals, including Gaetano Armao, the former Vice President of the Sicilian Region and former legal advisor to President Renato Schifani. Prosecutors have requested arrest measures for eight of the suspects, including house arrest, and a ban on residence for one other.

Armao, who recently chaired the regional technical commission for environmental authorizations, is accused of using his position to facilitate environmental permits for companies, such as green energy firms C.V.A. Eos srle and C.V.A. spa, in exchange for bribes. The investigation alleges that payments were disguised as consultancy fees totaling approximately 147,494 euros, facilitated through attorney Pierluigi Matta.

Other notable figures under investigation include Giuseppe Geremia Lombardo, a regional deputy in the Sicilian Regional Assembly. Authorities have conducted searches at Armao's residence and professional offices in both Palermo and Rome.

Gaetano Armao has resigned from his role as legal advisor to President Schifani, stating his resignation is intended to protect regional institutions. He has denied all allegations, emphasizing that the commission's decisions are made collegially. President Schifani has commented on the case, emphasizing the presumption of innocence and stating the investigation is unrelated to the regional government's official activities.
