Sicilian corruption probe triggers political crisis

Overview

The Palermo Prosecutor’s Office has formally requested the arrest of Gaetano Armao, the former Vice President and Economy Assessor of the Sicilian Region, in connection with a corruption probe. The investigation focuses on the Technical Specialist Commission (CTS) for environmental authorizations regarding wind and solar energy, which Armao chaired until August 2026.

Prosecutors allege a scheme where bribes were funneled through attorney Pierluigi Matta, who acted as a middleman. Funds were reportedly transferred via bank accounts disguised as consultancy fees, then withdrawn in cash and delivered to Armao. Investigators have cited surveillance footage and wiretaps as evidence, including instances of cash being placed in a vehicle’s center console and Armao allegedly hiding a package inside a pendulum clock in his office. During searches of Armao’s residence, authorities reportedly seized 20,000 euros in cash.

The investigation, which includes nine individuals such as regional deputy Giuseppe Geremia Lombardo, has triggered a crisis of institutional trust. The pendulum clock used to hide cash has become a symbol of public distrust, fueling debates regarding political privilege and judicial investigations in the region.

In response, the Regional Council has approved a bill to regulate the relationship between lobbyists and public administration as President Renato Schifani promotes efforts toward “institutional moral recovery.” Meanwhile, the Sicilian regional anti-mafia commission, led by President Antonello Cracolici, has launched a fact-finding investigation to examine potential systemic failures and administrative transparency.
