Gaetano Armao faces arrest request in Sicilian corruption probe

The Palermo Prosecutor's Office has requested the arrest of Gaetano Armao, the former Vice President of the Sicilian Region, on corruption charges. The investigation centers on the Special Technical Commission for environmental authorizations, which Armao previously chaired.

Investigators allege that Armao received bribes through lawyer Pierluigi Matta, who reportedly acted as a middleman between Armao and various entrepreneurs. According to court documents, Matta received funds via bank transfers disguised as consulting fees, which were then withdrawn in cash and delivered to Armao. Wiretaps and surveillance footage allegedly document these exchanges, including one instance where cash was placed in a car's center console and another where Armao was recorded hiding a package inside a pendulum clock in his office.

The scandal has triggered political tension within the Forza Italia party and prompted Sicilian President Renato Schifani to evaluate future administrative decisions. Additionally, the Regional Anti-Mafia Commission has launched an inquiry into the matter. Among those named in the investigation is Giuseppe Geremia Lombardo, a regional deputy and member of the Movimento per l’Autonomia, who has since stepped back from certain parliamentary commissions.
