Gagauzia to nominate candidates for regional electoral body, awaiting CEC approval

Valentin Gaidarji, president of the People's Assembly of Gagauzia, said the autonomous region must nominate candidates for the regional electoral commission, after which Moldova’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) will examine and approve the lists. He described the procedure as a compromise between Chisinau and the Gagauz capital, Comrat, intended to balance state and regional interests. Candidates are required to be professionals, fluent in Gagauz, residents of the region and knowledgeable of regional legislation and autonomy.

Gaidarji also reaffirmed the Assembly’s principle of retaining a majoritarian electoral system for its deputies, despite ongoing discussions at the national level about moving Gagauzia’s elections to a proportional model as part of a uniform electoral system for the whole country.
