Armenia: Gagik Tsarukyan trial begins amid political tensions

Armenia faces several domestic political and legal developments. In the legal sphere, preliminary hearings have commenced in the case against Republic Party leader Gagik Tsarukyan, who faces charges of fraud, embezzlement, and money laundering. During the proceedings at the Avan Administrative District Court, the court rejected a motion to remove defense attorney Yerem Sargsyan from the case.

Politically, commentator Nairi Khikyan criticized Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, alleging the government is using territory exchange discussions—specifically regarding Tigranashen—to manipulate public sentiment. Meanwhile, reports indicate internal divisions within the Prime Minister's staff regarding a report on the crisis within the Armenian Apostolic Church, which identifies several clergy members for alleged violations of monastic vows.

In economic and social news, Gagik Tsarukyan warned that geopolitical tensions between major powers could lead to significant losses for Armenia's agricultural sector and exporters. Additionally, the 'Hayastan' All-Armenian Fund and TUMO Center have signed a memorandum to establish a TUMO box in the Mush district of Gyumri to expand technological education for youth. On the local level, Yerevan officials have proposed restricting vehicle access from provinces to manage traffic congestion, a move drawing criticism from former MP Garnik Danielyan.
