Gaiole in Chianti restores Torrente Chianti with manual cleanup and circular‑economy steps

The Consorzio di Bonifica 6 Toscana Sud carried out two interventions on the Torrente Chianti that runs through the town of Gaiole in Chianti. The first phase involved manual maintenance—no excavators or heavy machinery—to protect the delicate environment and clear invasive vegetation, allowing water to flow normally downstream.

Following the cleanup, the riverbed was freed from excess soil in a second operation prompted by Mayor Michele Pescini and Consorzio president Federico Vanni. The work improved hydraulic efficiency and lowered the risk of hydro‑geological problems. The extracted material was analysed and then transferred to a local farm for reuse, illustrating a practical circular‑economy example. Both officials highlighted the stream’s cultural importance, noting that the valley gave the Chianti name and that preserving it safeguards community heritage.
