Gaiole expands regional sustainability network

Overview

In early July 2026, the Consorzio di Bonifica 6 Toscana Sud, urged by Mayor Michele Pescini and Consorzio president Federico Vanni, carried out a two‑phase manual cleanup of the Torrente Chianti. The work restored natural flow, reduced flood risk, and repurposed extracted soil for a local farm, showcasing a circular‑economy approach to environmental management.

A fortnight later, the Gaiole municipal council approved a €40,000 grant programme for local associations, covering cultural, sporting, social and solidarity activities. Ten percent of each contribution is earmarked for a solidarity fund to support groups facing difficulties. Both actions reflect the town’s strategy of investing in community‑wide projects that combine heritage preservation, ecological stewardship, and social cohesion.

On 17 July, the neighbouring municipality of Castellina in Chianti voted to join Gaiole’s Renewable Energy Community (CER). Mayor Giuseppe Stiaccini highlighted that the partnership aligns with national and EU decarbonisation targets, allowing households, firms and public entities to share renewable electricity generation, benefit from self‑consumption and storage incentives, and achieve estimated savings of 10 %–40 %. By integrating into the existing CER, Castellina avoids the costs of creating a new community while contributing to the expansion of renewable production capacity in the region.
