Galanz Retro Refrigerators Recalled After Fires, One Fatality

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of about 121,680 Galanz Retro Refrigerators sold nationwide through Home Depot and Amazon. The appliances, manufactured in China and marketed by Galanz Americas Limited Company, were found to have internal electrical components that can short‑circuit and ignite, leading to 34 documented fires and one death. Affected units are identified by model numbers BCD‑215V‑62H, GLR76TRDER, GLR76TBKER, GLR76TBEER and GLR76TWEER with date codes from December 2018 to December 2020. Owners are instructed to unplug the units and can register online for a free repair kit or schedule an in‑home repair by a qualified technician at no cost.

The recall covers refrigerators sold from January 2019 through September 2022, priced between $330 and $520. The CPSC warned that the fire risk poses serious injury or death hazards, and urged consumers to check the label on the back of the unit for the specified model numbers and date codes.
