Galatro commemorates forty Italian Military Internees deported to Nazi camps
A commemorative event titled ‘40 Storie di Dignità – Una Scelta di Libertà’ was held at the Auditorium delle Terme in Galatro to honor forty local citizens who were deported to Nazi concentration camps. These individuals, known as Italian Military Internees (IMI), were captured after September 8, 1943, for refusing to join the Italian Social Republic or fight alongside Nazi Germany.
Organized by the National Association of Former Interned in Nazi Camps (ANEI) – Reggio Calabria Metropolitan Section, the event included the presentation of individual stories and the delivery of the ‘Pergamena della Memoria’ (Scroll of Memory) to families as a symbolic recognition of their sacrifice. Nicola Marazzita, President of the ANEI Reggio Calabria section, noted that this is the first initiative in Calabria dedicated specifically to restoring the individual memories of these internees.
During the ceremony, the Mayor of Cittanova, Domenico Antico, announced that a monument dedicated to the IMI will soon be constructed in Cittanova.
