Galeão Airport taxi drivers engage in violent brawl
A violent confrontation broke out between taxi drivers at Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão International Airport on Wednesday, September 30. The brawl involved at least 20 drivers from various cooperatives and the Táxi. Rio app, resulting in physical assaults including punches and kicks.
The conflict was triggered by a reorganization of taxi stands at the terminal’s departure area. The airport concessionaire, RIOgaleão, and the Municipal Secretariat of Transport (SMTR) stated the changes were implemented to improve vehicle flow and prevent irregular passenger solicitation. The previous departure point was replaced by a new five-space stand in the arrival area, operating on a queue system.
Security teams from RIOgaleão and the Military Police intervened to contain the disturbance and stabilize the area. While videos of the fight circulated widely on social media, authorities reported no immediate arrests or serious injuries at the time of the incident.
