Galicia begins historic early grape harvest

Galicia is experiencing its earliest grape harvest on record, with all five regional denominations of origin beginning the harvest in mid-August. This represents a significant shift from traditional schedules, where harvesting typically occurred in mid-to-late September.

Viticulture experts and technical directors note that rising average temperatures and changing climate patterns are forcing the sector to adapt to these new realities. In the O Salnés region, firms such as Martín Códax have already begun work, while others like Condes de Albarei are monitoring weather conditions to mitigate water stress.

Despite the early start, the sanitary condition of the grapes is reported to be excellent. While the harvest volume may not be significantly higher than previous years, the Unións Agrarias (UUAA) union estimates that production could exceed 80 million kilograms this campaign, compared to approximately 76 million kilograms in the previous cycle.
