Progress of record early grape harvests in Galicia

Overview

The historically early grape harvest in Galicia has progressed through all five regional denominations of origin. By mid-August, the Monterrei Denominación de Origen commenced its season, making it the last region to begin. In Monterrei, early varieties such as Bastardo and Godello are being collected at wineries like Castro de Lobarzán.

In the Ourense region, specifically within the Valdeorras denomination, the harvest has moved at a rapid pace. As of late August, 26 out of 41 wineries were operational, with large producers like the Cooperativa de O Barco contributing to a collection of between 2.4 and 2.5 million kilograms.

Weather patterns have significantly influenced the campaign. While intense summer heat accelerated vegetative cycles and led to higher alcohol levels in certain varieties like Tintorera, recent persistent rainfall has caused some wineries to pause operations. However, producers indicate that light rain is providing essential hydration to vineyards in granitic and slate soils, which is expected to enhance final quality. Despite some signs of dehydration in certain fruit, the overall sanitary condition of the grapes remains reported as excellent.
