Galicia expands mental health services in Vigo and adds elevator to A Coruña health centre

The Galician health authority announced the opening of the Nicolás Peña mental‑health complex in Vigo, featuring the Nicolás Peña 2 outpatient unit, a Suicide Prevention Unit and plans for a Resistant Depression Unit and a child‑adolescent transition service. The new facilities aim to improve coordinated care and will be supported by the upcoming 2026‑2030 Strategic Mental Health Plan, which will increase specialist staffing.

In A Coruña, the municipality is drafting a project to install an elevator and platform at the O Castrillón health centre to overcome a steep access ramp that hampers elderly and mobility‑restricted residents. The proposal, modified by local neighbourhood groups, seeks to reduce costs from an estimated €1 million and could be completed by autumn, improving accessibility to the centre and nearby Carricanta preschool.

Both initiatives are part of Galicia’s broader effort to strengthen health‑care infrastructure and accessibility for its citizens.
