Galicia health system expansion

Entities: Alfonso Rueda · Hospital Universitario de Cabueñes · Antonio Gómez Caamaño · Conxo health centre · Xunta de Galicia

Overview

Late June 2026 the Vigo health authority pledged €19.8 million to fund specialist and allied‑health resident training for 141 MIR slots, expanding the regional budget. The following week the Nicolás Peña mental‑health complex opened in Vigo, offering outpatient, suicide‑prevention, resistant‑depression and child‑adolescent transition services, while an elevator and platform were proposed for the O Castrillón health centre in A Coruña to aid elderly and mobility‑restricted users. In mid‑July the national Ministry of Health reversed a 2025 decision, confirming Vigo will again host the MIR exam and adding 35 residency places for 2026‑27, including a new Emergency and Urgencies specialty, raising Galicia’s total to 725 slots. The ministry reiterated the decision on 9 July; the Vigo mayor welcomed it and criticised the regional health council for earlier obstruction. On 16 July the region reported further infrastructure upgrades: Building C of the Santiago de Compostela University Hospital Complex was completed after a €22 million investment, providing roughly 5,000 m² for an IVF unit, breast centre, day‑hospital, ENT, pain‑management and anaesthesia services, pending regulatory approval. Ourense University Hospital secured two portable radiology arches for €328,830 to support cardiac and surgical procedures (tender closed 10 August). On 21 July a public tender was launched for a new €8.6 million health centre in Ponteareas, covering over 5,700 m² for adult and paediatric consultations and nursing areas, with bids due 25 August. On 29 July regional president Alfonso Rueda announced a primary‑care reform to be detailed in September, adding nursing and podiatry posts and unveiling the renovated Conxo health centre, expanding from 400 m² to about 1,000 m² and providing family‑medicine, nursing, minor‑surgery, urgent‑care, dental, mental‑health and psychogeriatric services for more than 5,000 residents.
