Galicia faces debate over imported mussel impact on local industry

A debate has emerged in Galicia regarding the impact of imported mussels on the local industry. Following three consecutive years of record-low production in 2025, which reached approximately 178,000 tons, the sector is facing significant challenges.

Production shortages have been attributed to environmental factors, including red tides and the closure of cultivation areas due to biotoxins. To meet demand, canning companies and purification plants have turned to imports. This has led to a disagreement between the Consellería do Mar and industry organizations like Opmega.

Opmega and political representatives have expressed concerns that imports may silently replace local products in the market and negatively affect prices. Conversely, the Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Isaac Rosón, stated that protecting local mussels would interfere with free competition and noted that imports primarily serve the industrial transformation sector rather than the fresh market.
