Galicia health system under fire as PSOE doubts primary‑care reform

Socialist Party of Galicia (PSdeG) spokesperson Julio Torrado told the Galician Parliament that the regional government’s announced primary‑care reform lacks the political will and funding needed to succeed. He noted that past promises to limit patient loads for family doctors and paediatricians were never implemented and called for a substantial budget increase, more staff, better coordination and reduced bureaucracy. Torrado warned that Galicia already ranks second among Spanish regions for low primary‑care spending.

At the same time, PSdeG members and local activists staged a large protest in Verín, accusing President Alfonso Rueda and the governing People's Party of deliberately dismantling the Hospital de Verín. They demanded an end to service cuts, citing the loss of home‑hospitalisation and other essential services, and warned that the community faces longer waiting lists, increased travel to private providers, and overall degradation of public health care.

Both events highlight growing tension over the future of Galicia’s public health system and the political battle over funding and service provision.
