Galicia introduces digital education law to regulate AI and classroom technology

The Xunta de Galicia has initiated the legislative process for a new digital education law aimed at regulating the use of technology, smartphones, and artificial intelligence in classrooms. Presented by the Minister of Education, Science, Universities, and Vocational Training, Román Rodríguez, the law seeks to establish a legal framework for rights, guarantees, and rules that previously did not exist.

A key component of the regulation is the graduated use of devices based on student age and maturity. In early childhood education and the first two cycles of primary school, device use will be strictly collective. Individual use is slated to begin in the 5th grade of primary school, increasing progressively as students develop. In secondary education, the focus will shift toward developing digital competencies and fostering critical thinking to combat disinformation.

The proposal has sparked debate in the Parliament of Galicia. While the government argues the law is necessary to manage the digital transformation, opposition groups have criticized the timing, noting that Galicia has been heavily invested in digitalization through programs like E-Dixgal since 2014. The law covers six main areas: educational technology use, digital security and protection, rights and duties of the educational community, the role of teachers, family participation, and artificial intelligence.
