Galicia records largest grape harvest in history

Galicia has recorded its largest grape harvest in history, totaling 78.5 million kilograms. This figure surpasses the previous record of 77.8 million kilograms set in 2011.

While the region's largest denomination, Rías Baixas, saw a slight decrease to 46.85 million kilograms due to production losses from frost, hail, and pests, other denominations experienced significant growth. Ribeiro increased by 15%, Ribeira Sacra by 18%, and Valdeorras by 8%. Notably, Monterrei achieved its highest harvest ever, reaching 8.768 million kilograms.

In Valdeorras, the Godello grape has reached a record 6.26 million kilograms out of a total 8.1 million kilogram harvest. This surge is driving a structural transformation in the vineyards, as producers shift from red to white varieties to meet market demand. Technical director Jorge Mazaira noted that the region is restructuring old vineyards rather than simply increasing surface area, with white wines now accounting for approximately 80% of the denomination's production.
