Galician medical associations back Xunta primary care reform

Galician medical associations have expressed support for the Xunta de Galicia’s primary care reform plan for 2026-2030. This marks a shift from previous opposition regarding human resource reorganization due to a lack of consensus.

During a meeting with Health Minister Antonio Gómez Caamaño, representatives discussed the plan, which has been approved by the Consello de la Xunta. The reform is backed by over 320 million euros and aims to create 165 new medical positions as part of a broader expansion of 644 professional posts by 2030. The initiative is intended to reduce administrative burdens, allowing doctors to spend more time with patients.

Pilar Garzón, president of the Consello Galego de Colexios Médicos, noted that the modifications were the result of professional consensus. While the reform is viewed as a significant step toward maintaining a quality healthcare system, officials acknowledged that the implementation of pilot centers may require further adjustments based on professional feedback.
