Galician university students achieve high placement rates
The Galician University System (SUG) has recorded 12,035 new undergraduate enrollments, with 94.28% of students successfully securing a place within their top three preferences. Data from the Interuniversity Commission of Galicia (CiUG) shows that 8,605 students were admitted to their first-choice degree.
Institutional breakdowns reveal that the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) leads in volume with 4,785 students, achieving a 96.18% placement rate within the first three options. The University of Vigo (UVigo) registered 3,850 students, with 92.08% placed in their top three choices. The University of A Coruña (UDC) enrolled 3,400 students, maintaining a 94.12% placement rate within their top three preferences.
Demand remains particularly high for health and science degrees. At USC, the Medicine program in Santiago saw 411 enrollments, with 410 students entering as their first choice. Other high-demand programs include Pharmacy, Psychology, and Veterinary Medicine.
Despite these figures, UVigo Rector Carmen García Mateo has called on the Xunta to increase university capacity. She noted that while the university faces a 103% occupancy rate, many students are unable to study their first choice, which may lead to higher dropout rates or students leaving the region for private institutions.
