Galician wine regions begin historically early grape harvest

Viticulture regions in Galicia, Spain, are experiencing an unprecedented early start to the grape harvest due to high temperatures and drought. In the Rías Baixas region, wineries such as Marqués de Vizhoja have begun harvesting nearly a month earlier than usual, a shift attributed to accelerated vegetative cycles caused by summer heat. While some producers like Martín Códax anticipate a 20% reduction in production due to lack of rainfall, the regulatory council estimates a total harvest of approximately 50 million kilograms, representing a 5% increase compared to 2025.

Similarly, the Monterrei Denominación de Origen has commenced its harvest, making it the last Galician wine region to begin the season. Early varieties like Bastardo and Godello are being collected at wineries such as Castro de Lobarzán. Technical directors note that while the grapes are in an optimal state of maturity and health, the harvest process may be gradual and could extend into early October depending on upcoming weather patterns and rainfall.
