Galicia's AP-9 Highway Transfer Approved, Push for Free Toll
Socialist regional leader José Ramón Gómez Besteiro announced that the transfer of ownership of the AP‑9 highway to the Xunta de Galicia is now a reality under the new socialist government. He called on the regional authorities to negotiate making the motorway free for users, saying the current 75% discount on tolls is insufficient. Besteiro said a formal agreement is expected to be reached in the Spanish Congress of Deputies this week.
He contrasted the situation with the previous PP administration, noting that the AP‑9 had been "the most expensive highway in Spain without discounts" and that no significant investment has been made on the northern high‑capacity road (VAC Norte) since 2012‑13. Besteiro urged the Xunta to act on new infrastructure investments to improve road connectivity in the Ferrol area.
The move reflects a broader push by the regional socialist party to secure greater benefits for highway users and address longstanding infrastructure gaps in Galicia.
