Galicia's BNG urges transfer of all pending competencies from Spanish state

BNG spokesperson Ana Pontón said the party will take the initiative to claim the transfer of all competencies still pending under the Galician Statute, as well as those requested by the Galician Parliament and already granted to the Basque Country and Catalonia. She made the remarks at the opening of a workday on self‑government and competencies organised by BNG and the Fundación Galiza Sempre, reiterating the party’s commitment to present a political status proposal for Galicia before the end of the year.

Pontón outlined a “competency white paper” that will examine issues such as a Galician police force, rail‑infrastructure management, traffic and highway control, energy planning, maritime rescue, ports of general interest, social‑security administration and labour‑inspection powers. She criticised the national government of the Partido Popular for “boicotting” Galicia’s autonomy, citing the recent blockage of the AP‑9 highway transfer in Congress. While stressing that gaining competencies is essential, Pontón added that it will not resolve deeper structural problems and called for the recognition of Galicia as a nation.
