Galicia's Carballiño to set world record with 610‑kg octopus dish

The municipality of Carballiño in Galicia is preparing a 610‑kilogram octopus tapa for the 64th Festa do Pulpo on 9 August, aiming to break the world record for the largest octopus plate. The dish will be cooked on a 5.37‑metre diameter platter, using 8 kg of salt, 55 litres of olive oil and 3 litres of paprika, and is expected to yield about 1,800 servings. Tickets cost €7 and include the tapa, wine, bread, dessert and a souvenir plate, with live music and other festivities.

Spanish chefs commonly advise freezing octopus for 8–15 days before cooking to improve tenderness. Chef Pepe Solla explains that ice crystals formed during freezing break the muscle fibers, shortening the cooking time. Chef Dani García agrees that freezing “breaks the muscle,” while Chef José Andrés notes that octopus texture is more similar to meat than to fish.

Separately, the Cofradía de Pescadores de Barallobre announced the Fiesta del Marisco 2026, scheduled for 22–23 August 2026 in the port of Barallobre (Fene). The event, backed by regional authorities, will showcase local seafood such as clams, razor clams, octopus, empanadas and the traditional Arroz de Barallobre, featuring music, showcookings and family activities.
