Galicia food festivals and octopus record

In early August, the municipality of O Carballiño in Galicia prepared a 610-kilogram octopus tapa for the 64th Festa do Pulpo, planning to break the world record for the largest octopus plate. The dish was to be cooked on a 5.37-metre platter with massive amounts of salt, olive oil and paprika, and the event would include tickets, wine, dessert, a souvenir plate, live music and other festivities. The announcement also mentioned the upcoming Fiesta del Marisco in Barallobre, which would showcase regional seafood.

A few days later, officials confirmed that the record had been set: the 610-kg octopus tapa was cooked and served to roughly 1,800 guests, cementing the culinary achievement. The same period saw the town of Burela host its 35th Feira do Bonito, a tuna-focused festival featuring grilled tuna, stews, tapas, concerts and traditional bagpipe performances, highlighting Galicia’s broader summer food celebrations.

Following the record attempt, the 64th Festa do Pulpo concluded as a large-scale celebration. Authorities reported that approximately 50 tons of octopus were cooked at the Municipal Park alone during the festivities. The event drew an estimated 50,000 attendees to the park, with significantly higher numbers participating across the municipality throughout a three-week period of cultural programming. This year's festival featured Lanzarote as a guest and included traditional elements such as the Banda de Gaitas de O Carballiño and various Galician folk festivals. While the event continues to grow, some veteran participants suggested concentrating more activities within the municipal park to improve the atmosphere.
