Galmudug leader transfers personal military assets to state security
Galmudug state leader Liibaan Ahmed Hassan has transferred his personally owned weapons, vehicles, and military supplies to the regional administration’s security agencies. The handover ceremony, attended by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in the regional capital of Dhusamareb, aims to strengthen government control over security resources and bolster operations against al-Shabab.
Liibaan stated that the equipment will officially become government property and remain under the control of Galmudug’s security institutions beyond his term in office. He emphasized that statehood requires security resources to be held by legally mandated government institutions rather than private individuals or politicians. The leader noted that improved security is a priority to attract investment, expand commerce, and allow international organizations to operate safely in the region.
During the same event, Liibaan addressed regional security concerns, pledging that the people of Galmudug are ready to defend the country against terrorism and foreign interference. This follows a period of political transition in the region, as Liibaan’s administration was established following a court-ordered rerun of elections.
