Overview
Following a court-ordered rerun of elections due to procedural violations, Liibaan Ahmed Hassan of the Justice and Unity Party was elected as the new president of Somalia’s Galmudug state. Hassan secured 72 votes from the House of Representatives, defeating Abdulkadir Abdullahi Diriye. Abdiweli Ibrahim Garyare was also elected as vice-president.
Following his election, Hassan transferred his personal military assets, including weapons, vehicles, and supplies, to the regional administration’s security agencies. This handover, attended by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, was intended to consolidate government control over security resources and support operations against al-Shabab. Hassan stated that such resources must be held by legally mandated government institutions rather than private individuals to ensure stability and attract investment.
