Gambero Rosso blind taste test ranks top supermarket butters

A blind taste test conducted by Gambero Rosso experts, including a master ice cream maker and a cheesemonger, evaluated 30 different butter brands to determine if higher prices correlate with superior quality. The study included historical brands, organic options, and private labels from supermarkets and discount stores.

The results indicated that price is not a definitive indicator of quality. Among the top performers, Coop Italia’s Fior Fiore Burro dell’Alto Adige and Beppino Occelli’s Burro Calco Mucca received high marks for their complex aromas and textures. Notably, Conad butter, priced at 1.49 euros per 125g, was identified as a significant surprise due to its balanced flavor and full structure.

Experts noted that while color can vary from white to deep yellow based on cow diet and cream processing, it does not serve as a certification of quality. When selecting butter, consumers should focus on ingredients, the origin of the cream, and the cost per kilogram.
