Senegal President Faye Dismisses Prime Minister Sonko, Sparks Political Turmoil

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye removed Ousmane Sonko as Senegal’s prime minister on 22 May, a decision announced on 29 May that plunged the country into a political crisis. Analysts warned that the move could jeopardise Senegal’s stability and its migration‑and‑economic agreements with Europe. The dismissal leaves a power vacuum as the government prepares to appoint a new premier, with Deputy Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo slated to take office.

Sonko, speaking at the hand‑over ceremony, said the National Assembly would support the government “as long as it serves Senegal’s national interest.” Opposition leader Ibrahima Thiam called for an immediate audit of Sonko’s two‑year tenure, demanding a full accounting of reforms and public spending.

Former president Abdoulaye Wade, celebrating his 100th birthday, announced he would not comment on the growing tensions, stating that “the centenary celebrations must remain above the political fray.”
