Senegal split deepens as Kiiraay party launched

Entities: Ousmane Sonko · Pastef · Bassirou Diomaye Faye · Senegal · PASTEF (African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity)

Overview

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s dismissal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko in late May 2026 triggered a parliamentary crisis and a June constitutional amendment barring a sitting president from heading a political party. Sonko, re‑elected leader of the ruling PASTEF party and now speaker of the National Assembly, pushed the amendment forward as youth protests grew and public confidence in Faye fell to roughly 30 %.

On 25 July 2026 Faye formally unveiled the Kiiraay – Les Patriotes Républicains party in Dakar, describing it as an “open house” that would welcome young people, women, farmers, fishermen, teachers, health workers and the diaspora. The launch cemented the rupture with Sonko, whose PASTEF party retains a parliamentary majority of 130 of 165 seats. The split unfolds amid a severe debt crisis – public debt is projected to reach 119 % of GDP by the end of 2024 – and the IMF’s suspension of a $1.8 billion credit programme over undisclosed liabilities.

The next day Deputy Amadou Ba of PASTEF criticised Faye’s use of the Wolof phrase “Sa fitna,” accusing the president of stirring an “economic fitna” through concealed debt and predatory resource management, and a “political fitna” by manipulating the electoral calendar and reviving old‑regime tactics. Ba’s remarks highlighted growing concerns over governance, debt transparency and the political future ahead of the 2027 local and 2029 presidential elections.

In response, Faye appointed economist Ahmadou Al Aminou Lo as prime minister, signalling a shift in economic policy while the political realignment continues to shape Senegal’s domestic and diplomatic landscape.
