Senegal political split deepens amid election delays

Overview

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s dismissal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko in late May 2026 triggered a parliamentary crisis and a constitutional amendment barring a sitting president from heading a party. In response to political pressure, President Faye postponed the 2027 local elections on 6 August. Kiiraay has since aggressively expanded its territorial footprint. In September 2026, the party launched an expansion strategy in the Matam department and Fouta region. In October 2026, the party held its first winter university in Dakar to define its doctrine and organizational structure. During this summit, leadership emphasized strict adherence to the Constitution and set an electoral goal of winning 80% of communes by 2027. While the party has gained new members, including Babacar Thiam of the Passy D’Abord movement and Atoumane Sy, it faces internal growing pains. In Thiès-Nord, the party has begun installing communal coordination, with founding member Massamba Diop elected as coordinator. In Kaolack, founding member Me Diaraf Sow has criticized publicizing internal disputes as a ‘political and strategic error.’
