Gambia's leaders clash over Barrow's third‑term push

Chief Lamin Mondo Jatta, the traditional ruler of Brikama North, warned that the ‘No To Third Term’ campaign and the Gambian Against Looted Assets (GALA) movement are unpatriotic troublemakers seeking to destabilise the country. Speaking at a National Council for Civil Education forum co‑hosted by the UNDP on 4 June 2026, he argued that the Gambian constitution permits the president to run for an unlimited number of terms and called on the groups to cease protests, register a political party and stop relying on foreign sponsors.

Former National People’s Party regional chairman Lamin Jatta, now a member of the National Democratic Party, said opposition parties are actively negotiating a united front for the 2026 presidential election to block any third term for President Adama Barrow. He reported that the NDP has already formed alliances with two other parties and urged dialogue over the United Democratic Party’s premature claim to the coalition flag‑bearer position. Both leaders framed the debate around term‑limit reforms and the upcoming election.
