Gambia political disputes heighten as officials defend government amid opposition criticism

The opposition GFA party rebuked Agriculture Minister Demba Sabally, accusing his administration of chronic fertilizer delays, lack of financing for smallholders and neglect of horticultural gardens. The party cited a 2024 audit showing no fertilizer deliveries upcountry by the end of June and warned of mismanagement of donor funds.

Presidential adviser Momodou Sabally forecast that after the December 2026 presidential election the country will become a one‑party state, saying no further elections will be held. He made the remarks at a youth event in Bakau, also criticising the mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council for infrastructure failures.

Another senior adviser, Saihou Mballow, dismissed opposition demands for presidential term limits, arguing that parties such as the United Democratic Party and the Gambia Democratic Congress lack credibility because their leaders have contested multiple elections. He noted that two draft constitutions proposing term limits were rejected by the National Assembly.
