Game Freak emphasizes traditional combat in Pokémon Champions

Game Freak developers Shigeki Morimoto and Kazumasa Iwao have highlighted the design philosophy behind Pokémon Champions, emphasizing the decision to preserve the series' traditional turn-based battle system. Iwao noted that while newer titles have moved away from these mechanics, the team wanted to ensure long-time fans could continue playing the established rules while introducing new elements to prevent the system from becoming stale.

Following its launch on Switch and Switch 2 in April and a mobile release in June, Pokémon Champions has reached 10 million combined downloads. According to a report from Sensor Tower covering the first month of the mobile release (June 16 to July 16, 2026), the top five regions for downloads are the USA, Japan, Brazil, Korea, and Thailand. Japan leads the game in revenue, followed by the USA, Korea, Taiwan, and Italy.
