Game Freak Pokémon combat system evolution
Overview
Game Freak developers have indicated that the Pokémon franchise may undergo significant changes to its traditional turn-based battle system in future mainline titles. To address concerns from long-term fans, the company developed ‘Pokémon Champions’, a free-to-play mobile and Nintendo Switch title designed to serve as a permanent home for the series’ established competitive rules and classic mechanics.
Following its launch on Switch, Switch 2, and mobile platforms, ‘Pokémon Champions’ has reached 10 million combined downloads. According to a Sensor Tower report covering the first month of its mobile release, the top five regions for downloads include the USA, Japan, Brazil, Korea, and Thailand, with Japan leading in revenue. Developers Shigeki Morimoto and Kazumasa Iwao have emphasized that ‘Pokémon Champions’ aims to preserve traditional mechanics to ensure long-time fans can continue playing established rules while the company introduces new elements to prevent the system from becoming stale.
Looking toward the franchise's tenth generation, upcoming titles ‘Pokémon Viento’ and ‘Pokémon Oleaje’ are scheduled for a 2027 release. Director Kazumasa Iwao stated that the company intends to evolve the combat system “little by little” to avoid alienating fans while experimenting with new mechanics. These new entries are expected to feature an open-world setting inspired by islands and oceans, representing one of the most significant transformations in the series' history.
