Gaming Industry Hit by Funding Loss at IO Interactive and PS5 Sales Drop

IO Interactive announced that its external partner withdrew funding for the in‑development RPG Project Fantasy. The partner, identified as Microsoft, pulled out, leading the Danish studio to consider staffing reductions and possible layoffs.

Across the sector, Sony reported a 58% year‑over‑year decline in PlayStation 5 unit sales, the steepest drop in the console’s 25‑year history. Analysts link the slump to rising development costs, supply‑chain pressures and a shift toward PC and cloud gaming, signalling a broader contraction in the AAA gaming market.
