Gandak River flooding causes major embankment breaches in Bihar
Severe flooding caused by the Gandak River is impacting multiple regions in North India following heavy rainfall in Nepal's catchment areas. The river reached a record water level of 91.25 meters at the Bagaha gauge station, surpassing the previous 2024 record of 90.90 meters.
In West Champaran, the Champaran embankment suffered significant damage, including a 150-foot breach near Khairatwa. This has resulted in the flooding of Bagaha city, where nine wards, the SP office, and the police lines are submerged. Major roads, including the Bagaha-Bettiah and Bagaha-Valmikinagar routes, are impassable, forcing residents to use boats for transport.
The flooding has extended to several other districts. In Gopalganj, the Diara region is experiencing water levels up to 5 feet on roads, cutting off village connectivity and forcing residents and livestock to seek refuge on embankments. Other affected areas include East Champaran, Saran, Muzaffarpur, and Vaishali. Additionally, an embankment breach has been reported in the Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh.
Water Resources Department teams and district administrations are currently engaged in repair work and rescue operations to manage the breaches and provide relief to displaced populations.
