Gang Suppression Force deployed to Haiti to combat violence

The Gang Suppression Force (GSF), authorized by the United Nations Security Council in 2023, has been deployed to Haiti to neutralize, deter, and weaken gangs affecting the population. This marks the fifteenth mission sent to the country since the early 1990s.

With a strength of up to 5,500 troops and 50 civilian officials, the mission is funded through UN member state contributions and a trust fund exceeding $200 million. Operations utilize intelligence-based tactics, including foot patrols, maritime units, and armed helicopters.

GSF spokesperson Igor Rugwiza noted that the ongoing crisis in Haiti has significantly impacted the Dominican Republic due to mass migration driven by violence and poverty. The mission aims to restore security so that displaced Haitians may return home, thereby reducing migration pressures. However, Rugwiza acknowledged challenges, noting that the force may not have sufficient troops to secure the entire border.
